Overview

Among the ten incarnations of Lord Mahavishnu, the third incarnation was of Varaha, the Boar. The temple at Thiruvidanthai is devoted to Lord Vishnu's this form of incarnation. About the Temple

Epigraphical evidences found in the temple speak of Kings belonging to different dynasties like Chola, Udaiyar, Pandya, and others patronising the temple from the 10th to the 16th centuries A.D. On festive occasions, the deity is decorated with a garland of 108 Saligrams, which was presented to the God by a staunch devotee Hariseka Maharaj, the ruling King of Mahabalipuram. The sacred shrine has vast sea to its East. Surrounding the inner sanctum, there are small separate shrines for Komalavalli Thayar(the first daughter of sage Kalava), Sri Andal, God Ranganatha, Goddess Ranganayaki and others. The holy water-front is Kalyana Theertham and Varaha Theertham. Dips in these sacred tanks during the solar months of Aries (April-May) and Aquarius (February-March) respectively would ensure wish-fulfilment and salvation of the devotees. There is also another sacred water-front called "Ranganathar Theertham”.

About The Deity

The Lord with the wild pig face is hailed as the epitome of all astuteness and learning. Symbol (unflinching) has His consort Akhilavalli Ammal sitting on His left thigh, His left hand enclosing Her waist, Her feet laying on the Lord's lower palm. ("Ida" in the name "Thiruvidanathai" alludes to the Lord holding His consort on His left side. "Ida" means "left side"). Lord Vishnu's idol is holding a conch in His upraised right hand and a disc in His left. His right foot, raised knee-high, is laying on the numerous hooded serpent Adi Sesha. The Utsavamurthy (parade divinity) is Nithya Kalyana Perumal, constantly dressed as a spouse, with a dark spot (to avoid hostile stare) to His left side cheek. Wedding service is led regular thus the Lord is affectionately called as "Nithya Kalyana Perumal" ("Nithya" implies every day and "Kalyana" the marriage).

Legend and Stories

The sanctuary is rich in pauranic legends. Sometime in the distant past, there carried on a sage, Kalava by name, who had 360 little girls. In those days, this sanctuary town was huge to the point that it had 360 agraharams (principle avenues). Keeping in mind the savvy, inhabitants in every road took up the errand of raising each of the 360 girls of the sage. When they grew up, the savvy felt that it would be a Herculean task undertaking to get every one of them wedded suitably. The sage prayed ardently at the feet of Lord Adi Varaha. The most caring Lord Maha Vishnu accepted the type of a Brahmachari (unhitched male), showed up in the first agraharam, proposed marriage with the first little girl and afterward wedded her. When the newly wedded went to the sanctuary of Lord Adi Varaha, they vanished strangely in the sanctum sanctorum. This was rehashed to whatever remains of sage Kalava's little girls, for a long time.

The stupefied Maharshi needed to know from God Himself the whereabouts of his little girls and sons in-law. When he entered the sanctum sanctorum, Lord Varaha showed up before him, holding all the 360 little girls on His lap. The Lord blended all the 360 souls into the single soul of Goddess Lakshmi, making Her sit on His raised left thigh. The sage was significantly elated to be the father of Goddess Lakshmi Herself. As the wedding service proceeded with for quite a while for 360 days, the spot came to be known as "Nithya Kalyana Puri" and the master as "Nirthya Kalyana Perumal".
